The Pat Walker Health Center (PWHC) is a federally qualified health center that has been providing high quality, free or low-cost medical and dental care since 1978. Located in San Francisco’s Bayview District, PWHC serves as the anchor of an integrated network of safety net services for one of the country’s poorest neighborhoods.
We offer comprehensive primary healthcare to those who are uninsured, underinsured or otherwise unable to access affordable care such as HIV testing; prenatal care; treatment for chronic illnesses like diabetes and asthma; physical exams; vaccinations including flu shots and tetanus boosters; mental health counseling; nutrition education classes on how to eat healthy on a budget ;and much more. Patients can also receive referrals from PWHC to free specialists in the Sacramento area, including otolaryngologists and orthopedic surgeons.
We also offer dental care with a focus on heavy-metal exposure through fillings for gold teeth or mercury amalgam; extractions of wisdom teeth that are impacted, infected or otherwise diseased; root canals without anesthesia if medically necessary ;and much more. We are one of few clinics in San Francisco providing this service at no cost .
Patients come from urban neighborhoods like Bayview/Hunters Point (PWHC’s adopted neighborhood), where unemployment is rampant and many residents live below the poverty level—nearly three times higher than San Francisco as a whole. Yet PWHC has been able to offer subsidized care for these patients, thanks to the generosity of donors and grants.
Rates: PWHC offers discounted rates on most services including dental work at no cost . Dental procedures are also available with a sliding scale fee schedule based on income . These fees help us provide greater access for our underserved populations.
